What is a Tornado Emergency?

A Tornado Emergency is special wording embedded inside a Tornado Warning. The National Weather Service uses it only when all three of the following are true:

  1. A severe threat to human life is imminent or ongoing.
  2. A confirmed, large, destructive tornado is in progress.
  3. The tornado is on a track toward a populated area.

The NWS issues roughly 30–50 Tornado Emergencies per year nationwide — about 3% of all Tornado Warnings. When you see this wording, take cover immediately: lowest floor, interior room, no windows, head covered.
